The 5 golden rules to keep your clipper sharp

Good to have the guide to hand. A good clipper lasts for years, as long as you give it a little attention. With the five golden rules below, your REVAHS stays sharp, quiet and powerful. Further down you'll find the steps for a sharply trimmed beard, a quick troubleshooter and a maintenance rhythm that's easy to keep up.

Rule 1: brush after every session

Hairs and skin flakes are the biggest enemy of sharp blades. They trap moisture and act like sandpaper between the blades. Click off the cutting head and wipe the blades and the inside clean with the included brush. Don't blow into the head with your mouth, as that pushes moisture inside. Thirty seconds of work, and it adds years to the lifespan.

Rule 2: oil every 3 to 4 sessions

Metal gliding over ceramic needs lubrication. Put two to three drops of oil on the blades, run the clipper for ten seconds so the oil spreads, and wipe away the excess. Do this every 3 to 4 sessions, and at least once a month, even if you don't cut often. Does your clipper have an oil indicator? Then also oil it as soon as the indicator lights up. You'll hear the difference right away: an oiled clipper sounds softer and glides more smoothly through the hair.

Rule 3: charge smart

Don't leave the clipper permanently on the charger. Charge it via the USB connection when the battery is nearly empty, and take it off the charger once it's full. That way the battery keeps its full capacity for years. Going on a trip? Charge it at home. With a full battery you can cut for weeks.

Rule 4: store it dry and dust free

Moisture and dust damage the blades and the motor. The Clipper One and Clipper Two are not waterproof, so after use, store your clipper somewhere dry, for example in a drawer or a case. Not on the edge of the sink and not in a damp bathroom cupboard. Taking it along in your gym bag or suitcase? Put it in a pouch or cloth so the blades stay protected.

Rule 5: replace the blades in time

Do you notice the clipper pulling instead of gliding, or leaving streaks? Then the blades are due for replacement. The ceramic blades from REVAHS stay sharp up to twice as long as steel, but even ceramic doesn't last forever. A new set fits your clipper in a few minutes and it cuts like new again.

Bonus: how to trim your beard sharply

1. Start dry and combed. Wet hair looks longer than it is. Comb everything in the direction of growth.
2. Start long. Choose a longer setting than you think you need. You can always go shorter, never longer.
3. Trim against the direction of growth. Calm, overlapping strokes. Use the taper lever for the transition to the neck and cheeks.
4. Outlines last. Define the jawline and cheeks without a guide comb. Two fingers above the Adam's apple is a good neckline.

Quick troubleshooter

• The clipper pulls at your hair. Almost always dry or dull blades. Start with oil (rule 2). Still pulling after that? Then the blades need replacing (rule 5).
• The clipper gets warm or sounds louder than before. Usually there are hairs under the head or the blades are dry. Brush first, then oil.
• The battery drains faster than it used to. First look at your charging habits (rule 3). Every battery loses some capacity after years, and that's normal.
• The fades don't come out clean. Work with smaller length steps and calm strokes, and check that the guide comb clicks on firmly.

Your maintenance rhythm in short

• After every session: brush, thirty seconds.
• Every 3 to 4 sessions, at least monthly: two to three drops of oil, one minute.
• Every month: click off the head and clean the inside thoroughly.
• When it pulls or leaves streaks: replace the blades.
